Join us at Avebury to celebrate World Environment Day! You are welcome to offer a movement piece among the stones, which could include a poem, a story, music or a combination of the above - as an individual or as a group. You are welcome to present, to participate in moments of movement or simply to witness as the day unfolds. We are developing a tradition of gathering at Avebury to mark World Environment Day and to acknowledge the site as a place of beauty, art and culture.

There is a café, but you may like to bring a packed lunch. Wet weather gear is also advisable. Please feel free to join us for a day of movement, spontaneity and community. The event is free.

If you would like to present something, or think you might like to, please let us know before June 1st, so that we have a sense of numbers and can include you on the programme.

Kwaidan - a spirit story from Japan.

A blind singer famous for his recitation of a famous sea battle, finds himself singing to the fallen of that battle. He is painted head to toe in the words of the Heart Sutra as protection against those unquiet dead: Gone, Gone, Gone to the far shore.

Directed, and with music by - Tim Jones

Performers: Joerg Schlueter,Christine Heller,Helen Lutz,Johanna Xenia Rafalski,Danial Rehse, Martin Thiel, Katrin Wolter, Esther Brandt, Marcel Eid.

Further details: Tim Jones (who says): "As we began rehearsals, with already an idea for a poster of Hokusai's famous The Wave, news came of the Japanese tsunami. The boat tossed on that wave seemed to symbolize the human overcome by the power of nature. On World Environment Day, our performance is a way, through storytelling, to express balance and harmony in our world, with our thoughts and prayers going out to our Japanese brothers and sisters."

Art, Culture and Environment on World Environment Day 2012

The aim of Web Art Garden is to enable a wide range of movement-based, artistic, cultural and environmental activities to take place at different locations around the world on 5th June 2012, marking World Environment Day.

Web Art Garden was conceived by Suprapto Suryodarmo and originally developed by Sandra Reeve and colleagues of theirs. So its roots are in non-stylised movement and in dance. But Web Art Garden events may take any movement-based form, including:

Performance, theatre, ritual, exhibition, singing, presentation, installation, poetry, writing, lecture, meditation and prayer, discussion, video, photography, film.

Web Art Garden is open to individuals, groups, organizations and institutions alike. Each participant or group of participants will create an event in their region, which reflects their approach to nature and creativity/environmental art/ecology and culture.

The regular celebration of World Environment Day each year on 5th June has been created with this in mind: to encourage creative expression and understanding of one's own culture and ecology as one of the factors which will facilitate healthy and confident collaboration between cultures.

Events can last for a few minutes or the whole day (or longer), on or around 5th June 2012.

If you want to attend, participate in or contribute to any event listed here, or create a new event for World Environment Day 2012, please contact the event administrator (details in the relevant listing on the Events Page) or e-mail us.

Afterwards, send us any documentation of your project so that we can post it on the website as a testimony to the day’s activities. Text, blogs and images (still or video) are all welcome, but do contact us first if you’re thinking of submitting large or complex files so we can discuss formats.Whatever happens, happens because we created it.

Arthur's Seat with remembrance ritual

Nicky Mae meditates above the spread of Edinburgh in the early
morning. Rock is worn and polished from continuous human climbing, scaling,
crawling, jogging, searching crevices and pathways to the
top..Arthur's Seat.

Our offerings were with movement, song, meditation and sharing
stories. The environment shared her beauty, magnificence, sunshine
and structure for us among the rocks, hills and grasses. A weasel
darted eel like across our pathway. Swans scattered white feathers
which were caught in between stones and weeds on the lake shore and
the yellow furze wafted her fragrance all about.
We were happy to connect with others who were joining in the web and
others who could not be there. A sense of gratitude and connection
prevailed with the gifting of the morning.

Finding a Niche I stand and connect with the coldness and strength of
Rock, and at this moment a jogger complete with headphones pauses
briefly to exchange a greeting. He is accompanied by his dog who also
pauses. Then as he heads off down the hill again he sings with his
plugged in set and I hear ..This is a "Love song for You..." "It's
OK" and as he drops further the "Its Ok" is repeated twice more.
Below us the city of Edinburgh spread out and the Firth Of Forth
sparkles in the morning light.

Meeting at St. Margarets Loch before 7.00am. Then a meditative walk along the Queens Drive to Dunsapie Loch and taking time for the ascent to Arthur's Seat. "Deep Time" is taken from Edinburgh's "Father of Geology", James Hutton 1726-1797.

We are developing a tradition of gathering at Avebury, to mark World Environment Day and to acknowledge the site as a place of beauty, art and culture. Once again, this year, at Avebury people will offer movement pieces among the stones, read poetry, share stories and play music alone and in groups.

World Environment Day 2008 - USA (June 5th, 2008)
Prescott, Arizona

Mizu Desierto, who had been teaching a month long course in Butoh-ritual dance through Prescott College, shared an offering of the culmination of that work, in the landscape of the desert, as an offering to the local community.
In Mizu's words: "We are happy to be dancing upon the planet with the web art garden".

Geo Legorreta and Gary took a boat trip in Paris on the 5th June and were aware of the connection with friends and colleagues and people akin to the motivation. They followed this with some movement and photography.

Diane Butler (USA / Tejakula, North Bali); Mamiek Suharti (East Java / Solo); and Suprapto Suryodarmo (Solo) as Dewi Sarawaswati--goddess for knowledge & art, Dewi Sri / Seblang--rice goddess for earth’s fertility, and Panji--a legendary prince caring for humankind and the environment; accompanied by village lesung rice pounding music and prayer song, offered a ritual selamatan for the renovation and prosperity of the antique market Pasar Triwindu.

GOA GAJAH TEMPLE LOTUS POND in BEDULU, BALI

Historically the area surrounding the Goa Gajah Temple elephant cave was a meditation hermitage connected with a seminal 11th Century deliberation of conciliation at Samuantiga Temple where Bali Aga, Çiwaist, and Buddhist societies met in friendship and were able to create offerings together for peace and prosperity.

The firmly seated elephant-headed Ganesa, is a patron deity of commercial and literary enterprises, removing obstacles especially in literary and educational matters.

Dharma Nature Time invited people to gather at the Goa Gajah Lotus Pond from 7 to 8 o’clock in the morning to make art & prayer offerings for World Environment Day.

World Environment Day 2008 - UK (10:30 - June 5th, 2008)
Avebury Stone Circle

Some small groups and individuals offered movement pieces, short performances and ritual during the day at Avebury Stone Circle, including Prapto who offered a ritual piece with Sitras, a Javanese dalang from the slopes of Merapi, who performs and runs a dance school, with others.

There were also opportunities for all to move in different parts of the site.

Garden is the right place as it already has the qualities of human, nature and Life, and can give space and time so that all the diversity of cultures in the world can speak without pressure by their creation as a being.

East, West, South and North can meet in the circulation of the garden without pushing or pressurising each other to lead or to follow. This meeting in the contemplation, freshness, joy and healing of the garden can make it easier for us to find the dialogue to support each other, in our modern and traditional cultures in their development, with the value of diversity in unity.

Garden has the quality of democracy; basically, all generations are comfortable in the garden. We can speak as who we are, without losing nature as a being and without losing our sense of religiosity.

So, I wish that we can create Web Art Garden in this world.
